PUERTO
RICAN SOCIETY ANNOUNCES SCHOLARSHIPS
The Puerto Rican Society, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation,
will award scholarships of one thousand dollars ($1,000)
to students that meet its qualifications. Awarding scholarships
is amongst the organization's major purposes.
The
scholarships of the Puerto Rican Society (PRS) are awarded
to Hispanic students from the St. Louis region with high
credentials and superior academic qualifications that are
US citizens and/or legal residents. Those meeting these
requirements are encouraged to apply for the scholarships.
One scholarship is reserved for a Puerto Rican student.
The scholarships are not limited to members of the Puerto
Rican Society.
The scholarships are granted to students that continue their
education in a college, university or other institution
of higher learning, whether for study at the undergraduate
or graduate levels. The 2008 Scholarship Application Process
will re-open February 1, 2008.
The
Scholarship Committee of the society is responsible for
overseeing the awarding of scholarships. The Scholarship
Committee has selected a Scholarship Evaluation Council,
which will screen and select the Hispanics that will be
awarded the scholarships. Members of the Society cannot
be members of the Scholarship Evaluation Council. The Scholarship
Evaluation Council will re-convene in January 2008.
Application forms for these scholarships can be requested
by writing to the Puerto Rican Society at PO BOX 6351, Chesterfield,
MO 63006. Interested parties may also ask for applications
by calling Mr. Arturo Latimer at 636-928-5529. The scholarships'
funds will be presented during the month of August 2008.

The

corporation whose objectives include: supporting education
scholarships for Hispanic students in the St. Louis metropolitan
area, promoting the awareness of the Puerto Rican culture
and traditions, ensuring self-improvement, providing social
activities for its members and their guests, sponsoring
and supporting events that will benefit the Puerto Rican
community, and strengthening mutual understanding throughout
the local community. Membership in the organization is open
to all persons who subscribe to and work toward attaining
the objectives of the corporation.

PUERTORRIQUEÑA ANUNCIA BECAS
La Sociedad Puertorriqueña, una corporación sin fines de
lucro, otorgará becas de mil dólares ($1,000) cada una a
estudiantes que califiquen. El otorgamiento de becas es
uno de los objetivos principales de la sociedad.
Las
becas se otorgan a estudiantes hispanos, de la región de
San Luis, que tengan buenas calificaciones y buenos antecedentes,
y que sean ciudadanos de los Estados Unidos y/o residentes
legales de la región. Se exhorta a los estudiantes a que
soliciten las becas. Una beca está reservada para un estudiante
puertorriqueño.
Las
becas no se limitan a los miembros de la Sociedad Puertorriqueña.
Las becas son para estudiantes que continúen sus estudios
en colegios, universidades y otras instituciones postsecundarias,
sea para estudios postgraduados o no. Las solicitudes estaran
disponibles en el mes de Febrero del 2008.
El
Comité de Becas de la sociedad es responsable del proceso
de selección. Este comité ya ha seleccionado a un Concilio
de Evaluación de Becas que escogerá a los estudiantes hispanos/latinos
que serán merecedores de las becas. Los miembros de la sociedad
no pueden ser miembros del concilio de evaluación. La selección
de los ganadores de las becas se hará en el mes de Julio
de 2008.

solicitudes para las becas se pueden pedir escribiendo a
la Sociedad Puertorriqueña, PO BOX 6351, Chesterfield, MO

Puerto
Rican Society Awards Scholarships
St. Louis, MO – August 15, 2007 – Four Hispanic youth were
awarded scholarships from the Puerto Rican Society (PRS)
to pursue their higher education. The recipients of the
Society’s 2007 scholarships were: Mariaimme’ Gonzalez, Diana
Carmen Ortiz, Georgina L. Monfrinotti, and Carisee A. Zorrilla.
The scholarships were presented at the first annual Joint
Hispanic Scholarship Ceremony held at Lucas School House
on August 14th.
A Scholarship Evaluation Council composed of three non-members
of the Puerto Rican Society elected the winners. The PRS
scholarships are awarded to Hispanic students from the St.
Louis region with high credentials and superior academic
qualifications. The scholarships are worth one thousand
dollars ($1,000) each. The Puerto Rican Society has awarded
more than $30,000 in scholarship in the last ten years.
Gonzalez,
a native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, currently in her third
year of a Doctor of Philosophy of Education at the University
of Missouri – St. Louis majoring in Counseling and Gender
Studies. Throughout her studies she has maintained excellent
academic standings in all of her areas of studies. Her parents
moved to the US in the early 80’s because of father’s employer.
She is a first generation college graduate and soon to complete
a doctoral degree.
Ortiz,
a native of St. Louis of Puerto Rican descent, currently
a junior at the University of Missouri in Columbia majoring
in Biology with an almost 4.0 grade point average (GPA).
She wants to make a difference in this world and is very
passionate about environmental issues. She is an intern
at the Primate House in the St. Louis Zoo involved in behavioral
research studies. She plans to continue her studies and
pursue a master’s degree. She will be involved in programs
that educate and spread awareness to the general public
concerning conservation issues and she hopes to inspire
those around her.
Monfrinottti, a native of St. Louis of Argentine descent,
just graduated from Parkway West High School with a 3.7
grade point average (GPA). She plans to attend Maryville
University here in St. Louis. She is also a first generation
college-bound in her family. Her Spanish teacher was very
impressed with Georgina because she always demonstrated
to be focused, dedicated and open-minded. She always pursues
her very best working equally well with groups or partner
projects.
Zorrilla, a native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, just graduated
from Francis Howell North World Languages High School in
St. Charles, MO and has been accepted to begin her collage
career at St. Charles Community College. She plans to finish
a bachelor degree at the University if Missouri majoring
in Sociology and Psychology to eventually become a Social
Worker. One of her teacher commented that Carisse is a very
articulate student who expresses her point of view clearly
maintaining a positive attitude ad friendly demeanor. She
has been quite active in many school and community organizations
dedicating many hours for which she had been duly recognized.
She holds high standards of conduct and will always be a
truly representative of her culture.
